A mostly green book cover with the words "Adrift" and "Will Dean". In the cover, a boat floats in the middle of a small canal.

This is a family’s descent into utter darkness. When Peggy, Drew and their teenage son move to a small canal boat, they think all their family problems will be solved, but it’s really just the beginning. Both Peggy and Drew are writers, and when Peggy finds sudden success, Drew’s jealousy knows no bounds. He moves their boat further and further away from the rest of civilization, just adrift in the middle of nowhere, and where Peggy was once the glue that held this family together, it may not be able to stop what’s coming next.

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

My review:

I can definitely see why people will love this book, but sadly, I didn’t. This book is dark. It’s haunting, ruthless and truly a slow burn. The way the characters in this book are treated is deplorable, and Will Dean wrote it so well that the proper emotions of hatred and disgust aren’t hard to feel as you read it.

That being said, I personally didn’t love the story itself. I nearly DNF’d at about 40% through, but then didn’t want the time I’d already spent in the story to be for nothing. I need to stop being so hard on myself—sometimes books just aren’t meant for me to read. This book made me seriously uncomfortable, and obviously that’s what it was supposed to do, but it’s not something I’d like to spent my time reading. So just be warned before going in: Will Dean does a great job, but it’s not a story I’d want to read again.

Now, here’s a #QOTD for you: Do you prefer to read books that truly unsettle you? The books that make you disgusted with most (if not all) of the characters? Let me know what you think!
