The book cover of Jessica Knoll's "Helpless"

A smouldering psychological thriller with a singular, mind-bending last page…

That sounds GOOD, doesn’t it? Well, here are some more details…

Faye’s beloved former college professor has died suddenly, and she must return to her past to say her goodbyes. When she flies back for the funeral, she runs into her ex, Henry, whose heart she broke 12 years ago when she left for Hollywood.

Now that Henry and Faye are near each other again, something dangerous is brewing inside. That’s made even more evident when he drugs her and kidnaps her from her hotel room. But why???

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

My thoughts

Let me tell you… When I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this ARC in the mail from Simon & Schuster Canada and Scribner Books, I was so excited to dive straight into this thriller—this utterly suspenseful kidnapping story. I couldn’t wait to figure out where it would lead.

What I wasn’t expecting? The SPICE! 🌶️

Holy cow. I don’t think I’ve read a book like this since the Fifty Shades trilogy in 2014. (And please do not take me saying that as me saying “this book is like Fifty Shades”. It’s 100% nothing like it. Even if Jessica Knoll mentions that exact series in the book at some point.)

So spicy and then thriller aspects and a bit of a mystery… It’s all tied together in this book, and I loved it all. It was a wonderful surprise and something that truly stood out among all the other books I’ve read so far this year.

Helpless by Jessica Knoll is officially out on July 7th, and a big, big, BIG thank you to Jessica Knoll for writing this story, and to Simon & Schuster Canada and Scribner for allowing me to read it early—in paperback!

Question of the day

Have you read a book this year that totally surprised you, because it’s marketed and categorized in one way but technically roams over into another category? If so, please share which ones have surprised you the most!
