Welcome to “The Dominion”, where secrets lurk behind every door.
It’s 1929, and The Dominion Hotel has opened on Front Street in Toronto (does that sound familiar?). Rosie Ryan has her heart set on becoming a chambermaid, and when she’s just trying make enough money to get out of her current living situation, things start to go awry.
Then we have Bridget in Toronto 2024, a building inspector overseeing renovations happening at The Dominion. When she finds mysterious boxes, secret corridors and locked doors, she realizes she’s stumbled onto something much bigger than she ever imagined.
But how do these stories connect?
As part of Simon & Schuster Canada’s Influencer Program, I was given an ARC to read in exchange for my honest review. So, a big thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and to NetGalley for getting me a copy, and also to Genevieve Graham for writing this book.
My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My thoughts
The history that’s woven throughout this book was really intriguing, and as someone who lived in Toronto for several years, I loved it and loved what it added to the story.
There was a great little mystery in both the 1929 and 2024 storylines, and it all wraps up well. It made me tear up a little!
Honestly, going into this, I thought I’d be reading something like Nita Prose’s “The Maid”. There are a lot of similarities. But the books diverge enough after the beginning, so you don’t have to worry about that.
The only reason I didn’t give this 5 stars is the plot was a tad slow at the beginning. But everything else was wonderful and I recommend you read this book—whether you’re from Toronto or just love a good piece of mysterious historical fiction. Comes out on April 21!
