The cover of Jo Nesbø's book, "Wolf Hour"

Now, what can I say about Wolf Hour that won’t give too much away? Let’s stick to five things:

  1. This is a story set in 2016 Minneapolis, but also in 2022.

  2. Gang violence, mysterious murderers, and a very clear suspect.

  3. Cops… some great, some not so great, and one who is suspended but doesn’t really listen to that.

  4. The murderer and another main character share a tragic past.

  5. Taxidermy. That’s all I’ll say on that.

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My thoughts

I thought the story was great! There were some twists, there were a lot of d**ths, and there was a good resolution to finish it all off.

I must admit that a reason for my 4-star rating is that the book starts and ends with the 2022 perspective, and this different character is writing a story about what happened in 2016. I don’t think this was at all necessary. I guess the only benefit of this 2022 perspective is that we get to see what has happened with the characters we follow in 2016, but is that enough to alter the whole structure of the book? I don’t know.

I’ve heard many great things about Jo Nesbo’s books for years, and I’m glad I finally dove into one. I now need to go back and read some others, and I’ll definitely read his next one. If you have a favourite Nesbo book that you’d recommend, please let me know in the comments!

Question of the day

Do you like when there’s a story within a story? A great example of this kind of narrative structure is Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. I feel like I’m going back to my university days by asking this question, but I want to know your thoughts!
